Documentation: servertest.ini and SandboxVars generator

Two generators in one for a Project Zomboid dedicated server (Build 41): servertest.ini (DefaultPort 16261, Map, Mods, WorkshopItems, PVP, safehouses, backups) and servertest_SandboxVars.lua (zombie population, day length, loot, ZombieLore). Import, copy and download in your browser.

Open the tool

A Project Zomboid server is configured in the user folder Zomboid/Server/: servertest.ini (network, mods, rules) and servertest_SandboxVars.lua (world and zombies). The “servertest” prefix is the server name. This tool produces both files.

How to use the tool

  1. Start the server once (start-server.sh or StartServer64.bat), set the admin password, then stop it.

  2. Choose the file to generate (servertest.ini or SandboxVars) and import your existing one (optional).

  3. Set name, passwords, ports, map, mods and rules; for mods, prepare the lists with the “mod order” tool.

  4. Copy or download the file into Zomboid/Server/ (server stopped).

  5. Restart; sandbox changes only fully apply to a new world or through the server options.

Values and accuracy

Defaults come from Build 41 and may differ on your version (Build 42 worlds are incompatible with B41). Sandbox values are the in-game menu option numbers (e.g. Zombies: 1 = Insane ... 6 = None; ZombieLore.Speed: 1 = Sprinters, 2 = Fast Shamblers, 3 = Shamblers). The VERSION line must match your existing file.

Frequently asked questions

Where are the config files?
In the user folder Zomboid/Server/ (not the install folder): C:\Users\<user>\Zomboid\Server\ on Windows, ~/Zomboid/Server/ on Linux.
How do I change the server name?
The file name (servertest) is the internal name, chosen by the -servername launch argument; PublicName is only the name shown in the list.
