Install a Open//77 Cyberpunk server

Open//77 is presented as a community multiplayer mod for Cyberpunk 2077, but I found no official documentation or verifiable source describing its dedicated server (download, ports, configuration files). Rather than inventing commands, this guide gives the generic, safe method to host a game server, to complete with the mod team's documentation.

Step-by-step installation

  1. Get the server and its documentation only from the mod team's official channel (website, repository, official Discord).

  2. Read its requirements: exact Cyberpunk 2077 version, operating system, memory and dependencies.

  3. Create a dedicated non-root user (Linux) or a non-administrator Windows account for the server.

  4. Install it following its instructions, then run it once locally and test with 127.0.0.1.

  5. Note the ports stated by the documentation (and their TCP/UDP protocol) and check whether they can be changed.

  6. Open only those ports with the "Custom port firewall rules" tool (system, host, router).

  7. Set up a service (systemd or scheduled task) with the official start command.

  8. Regularly back up the server data stated by the documentation before each update.

  9. Present your server with the "Server presentation sheet" tool and add it on game-rank.com/jeux/open77-cyberpunk.

What is verified and what is not

  • Not verified: the existence of a downloadable dedicated server, its ports, configuration files, hardware requirements and operating system. No official source was found.
  • Observed: Cyberpunk 2077 has no official multiplayer; CyberMP, a separate multiplayer mod project, was described as in development and not publicly downloadable. Do not confuse the two projects.

Basic hygiene for a Linux VPS (Ubuntu/Debian)

These commands do not depend on the mod: dedicated user, system updates and a firewall allowing only SSH at first. Then add only the ports the mod documents.

sudo adduser --disabled-password --gecos "" gameserver
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
sudo apt install -y ufw
sudo ufw allow OpenSSH
sudo ufw enable
# puis, selon la documentation du mod / then, per the mod's documentation :
# sudo ufw allow <port>/<tcp|udp>

Ports to open

No verified default port for Open//77. Enter here those from the documentation: needlessly open ports enlarge the attack surface. On a home router, forward (NAT) only those ports to the local IP; at OVH, Hetzner, Scaleway also open them in the firewall / security group. Test from an outside network (mobile hotspot).

  • <port>/<tcp|udp> — to fill in from the mod's documentation (not officially documented here).

Windows firewall (netsh)

Template to adapt: replace PORT and the protocol with those from the documentation.

netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="Game server" dir=in action=allow protocol=UDP localport=PORT

systemd service (template)

Template without a real command: replace ExecStart with the server's official start command and WorkingDirectory with its folder. File /etc/systemd/system/gameserver.service.

[Unit]
Description=Game server
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target

[Service]
User=gameserver
WorkingDirectory=/home/gameserver/server
ExecStart=<official start command>
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Updates and backups

A multiplayer mod depends on the exact game and mod version: after each Cyberpunk 2077 or mod update, check the announced compatibility before reopening the server. Back up the server folder (see the documentation for game data) before updating.

# Sauvegarde / backup (cron : 0 4 * * *)
tar czf ~/backup-gameserver-$(date +%F).tar.gz -C ~ server

Troubleshooting

  • Players cannot connect from outside: port not open for the right protocol (TCP/UDP), missing NAT or provider firewall active; test from a mobile network.
  • Connection refused because of version: align the Cyberpunk 2077 and mod versions on the server and on players.
  • Service does not start: wrong path or user in the systemd unit; read "journalctl -u gameserver -e".
  • ufw firewall: locked out of SSH after enabling; always allow OpenSSH before "ufw enable".
  • No documentation available: do not run binaries of dubious origin; ask on the mod team's official Discord.

Frequently asked questions

Does Open//77 have an official dedicated server?
Not officially documented: I found no verifiable source. Check the mod team's official website or Discord.
Are Open//77 and CyberMP the same project?
I found no link between them. CyberMP is another community multiplayer mod for Cyberpunk 2077; do not assume they share a server or configuration.
What can I prepare right away?
A secured VPS or dedicated PC (non-root user, firewall), a presentation sheet with rules and mod list, and a backup plan. Specific commands will come from the mod's documentation.
Do I need the game on the server?
Not officially documented for Open//77: it depends on the mod's architecture. Follow the team's documentation rather than a guess.
