Documentation: Config file diff

Game server config comparison: paste two versions of a file (server.cfg, serverconfig.txt, GameUserSettings.ini, JSON…) and get a line diff (added, removed) and a key/value diff (added, removed, changed) with automatic INI/CFG or JSON detection. Option to ignore whitespace. Nothing is uploaded: everything is computed in your browser.

Open the tool

After a game update, a mod change or edits by several admins, it helps to see exactly what changed in a config file. This tool compares two texts, line by line and key by key.

How to use the tool

  1. Paste the old version in “File A” and the new one in “File B”.

  2. Read the key/value table: added, removed and changed keys.

  3. Check the line diff for ordering, comments and duplicates.

  4. Enable “Ignore whitespace” to hide indentation differences, then copy the summary.

Recognised formats

JSON is flattened into paths (a.b.0.c). For INI/CFG, “key=value” and “key value” lines are understood, [Section] headers prefix the keys, and comments (; # //) and quotes around values are ignored. If a key appears twice, the last value is kept (the line diff shows duplicates). XML is not parsed key by key: use the line diff. The line diff is limited to about 4 million comparisons (a few thousand differing lines).

Frequently asked questions

Are my files sent to a server?
No. The comparison runs in your browser. Still, avoid pasting real passwords (RCON, database) into any online tool.
Can it merge two files?
Not for now: the tool compares and summarises the differences (copyable) so you can carry changes over by hand into the right file.
