The Isle: Evrima has a free dedicated server (SteamCMD app 412680, “evrima” beta branch, anonymous login) for Windows and Linux, configured via Game.ini and Engine.ini. It is mostly bound by one fast core. The settings below come from host guides since Tripwire has not published detailed documentation.
Step-by-step installation
Check the machine: quad-core 3.5 GHz+, 6-16 GB RAM, 30-70 GB disk (host guides).
Download SteamCMD and create the server folder.
Install the server with SteamCMD: login anonymous, app_update 412680 -beta evrima validate.
Run TheIsleServer.exe ?Port=7777 -log (Linux: ./TheIsleServer.sh) once to generate the config, then stop it.
Start the server once, stop it, then edit TheIsle/Saved/Config/<Platform>Server/Game.ini.
Open ports 7777/UDP, 8888/TCP (RCON), 10000/TCP (queue) in the firewall and on your router.
Test on localhost (127.0.0.1), then from outside using another network.
Configure auto-start (scheduled task or systemd service).
Schedule backups of TheIsle/Saved and updates.
Requirements
From a host guide: CPU at 3.5 GHz or more (four cores minimum, mostly single-threaded), RAM 6-8 GB (20-30 slots) to 8-12 GB (50-100) or 12-16 GB (100+ with AI), 30 GB disk on Linux (up to 70 GB on Windows), 10 Mbit/s minimum. Windows Server 2016 R2+ with Visual C++ or Ubuntu. Same client/server version.
Local install (Windows)
Install the evrima branch, run TheIsleServer.exe ?Port=7777 -log, then connect from the game using 127.0.0.1.
C:\steamcmd\steamcmd.exe +login anonymous +force_install_dir C:\isle-server +app_update 412680 -beta evrima validate +quit
cd /d C:\isle-server
TheIsleServer.exe ?Port=7777 -logInstall on a Linux VPS / dedicated server
On Ubuntu/Debian: a non-root user, SteamCMD's 32-bit dependencies, install the evrima branch then ./TheIsleServer.sh. Config files are in TheIsle/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/. Evrima also needs EOS credentials in Engine.ini to be listed (supplied by the official template or host).
sudo adduser --disabled-password --gecos "" steam
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 && sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y lib32gcc-s1 curl ca-certificates
sudo -iu steam
mkdir -p ~/steamcmd ~/isle-server && cd ~/steamcmd
curl -sqL https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steamcmd_linux.tar.gz | tar zxf -
./steamcmd.sh +login anonymous +force_install_dir ~/isle-server +app_update 412680 -beta evrima validate +quit
cd ~/isle-server && ./TheIsleServer.sh ?Port=7777 -logPorts to open
- 7777/UDP: game and query (some guides suggest 7777-7779/UDP)
- 10000/TCP: queue (QueuePort)
- 8888/TCP: RCON (RconPort): restrict to your IP
Linux firewall (ufw)
On Ubuntu/Debian, allow SSH first so you do not lock yourself out, then the game ports.
sudo ufw allow OpenSSH
sudo ufw allow 7777:7779/udp
sudo ufw allow 10000/tcp
sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw statusWindows firewall (netsh)
In an elevated PowerShell (or administrator “cmd”):
netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="The Isle 7777-7779/UDP" dir=in action=allow protocol=UDP localport=7777-7779
netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="The Isle 10000/TCP" dir=in action=allow protocol=TCP localport=10000Provider firewall and port forwarding (NAT)
If the server is at a provider (OVH, Hetzner, Scaleway…), open the same ports in its network firewall (“security group”). For home hosting, forward the ports (NAT) from your router to the machine's fixed local IP. Test from outside (mobile data or a friend): a test from your own network proves nothing.
Auto-start and supervision
Create /etc/systemd/system/<name>.service, then: sudo systemctl daemon-reload && sudo systemctl enable --now <name>. Logs: journalctl -u <name> -f.

Updates, backups and restarts
Stop the server, re-run app_update 412680 -beta evrima validate, then restart. Back up TheIsle/Saved before any major update. Re-run it after every patch (do not drop -beta evrima).
# backup
tar czf ~/backup-$(date +%F).tar.gz -C ~/server TheIsle/SavedList and find your server
Once your server is public, add it on https://game-rank.com/jeux/the-isle (the owner's site) so players can find it, follow it and vote for it.
Troubleshooting
- Unreachable from outside but fine on localhost: the OS firewall, the provider firewall or the NAT forward is missing, or the protocol (UDP/TCP) is wrong. Check each layer one by one.
- Connection refused after a game update: client and server must run the same version. Re-run the server update, then restart it.
- The server exits immediately: start it from a console to read the error, and check free RAM, disk space and software prerequisites.
- The server is not in the list: check the [EpicOnlineServices] block in Engine.ini (EOS credentials) and port 7777/UDP.
- RCON does not respond: a standard RCON client (Source, mcrcon) does not work, use an Evrima-compatible client and the right port (8888/TCP).
Frequently asked questions
- What is the server's Steam app ID?
- 412680 with the evrima beta branch (app_update 412680 -beta evrima validate); without that branch you get the old Legacy version.
- How do I update the server?
- Stop the server, then re-run app_update 412680 -beta evrima validate; client and server must run the same version.
- How many players can a server handle?
- It mostly depends on single-core speed and AI density: set MaxPlayerCount and AIDensity (0.5 or lower suggested at 100+ slots) per host guides.
- How do I make my server known?
- Add it on https://game-rank.com/jeux/the-isle (the owner's site): players can find it, follow it and vote for it.
