The SCUM dedicated server is a 64-bit Windows program (SCUMServer.exe) installed for free with SteamCMD (App ID 3792580). Plan for at least 8 GB of RAM, about 15 GB of free disk and 15 to 30 minutes.
Step-by-step installation
Prepare a 64-bit Windows machine (PC or Windows Server) with at least 8 GB RAM.
Install Visual C++ (2012, 2013, 2015-2022) and the DirectX End-User Runtimes.
Download SteamCMD and install the server with app_update 3792580 (anonymous login).
Start SCUMServer.exe with -log -port=7777 -MaxPlayers=64 and wait for it to finish loading.
Stop the server and edit SCUM/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini.
Open UDP ports 7777, 7778 and 7779 in the Windows firewall and at your provider.
Test the connection in game (127.0.0.1:7777 locally, then the public IP).
Create a scheduled task to start the server automatically.
Schedule updates, backups of SCUM/Saved and restarts.
Requirements
- 64-bit Windows required (the server will not run on 32-bit)
- RAM: 8 GB minimum, more with more players and settings
- Disk: ~8 GB of files, 15 GB free recommended
- No Steam account needed (anonymous). Linux: no official native server documented — use a Windows VPS
Install (Windows local, VPS or dedicated)
Same procedure locally or on Windows Server. Run these commands in PowerShell, then join 127.0.0.1:7777. -MaxPlayers overrides the file value; -nobattleye disables BattlEye (not recommended).
C:\steamcmd\steamcmd.exe +force_install_dir C:\scumserver +login anonymous +app_update 3792580 validate +quit
cd C:\scumserver\SCUM\Binaries\Win64
.\SCUMServer.exe -log -port=7777 -MaxPlayers=64Ports to open
Values from the SCUM wiki with -port=7777: the query port is port+2 and the raw socket port+1. Change -port= to move the whole block. When running locally, avoid a query port between 27020 and 27050 (used by Steam). On a home router, forward these ports (NAT) to the machine; at OVH, Hetzner, Scaleway, also open them in the provider firewall/security group; test from another network.
- 7777/UDP — game client (-port=)
- 7778/UDP — raw UDP socket (port+1)
- 7779/UDP — Steam server browser query (port+2)
- 7777/TCP — RCON (optional)
Windows firewall
Administrator PowerShell:
netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="SCUM UDP" dir=in action=allow protocol=UDP localport=7777-7779Auto start (scheduled task)
Create a start.bat script (cd into SCUM\Binaries\Win64 then SCUMServer.exe -log -port=7777 -MaxPlayers=64) and run it at startup as SYSTEM. For supervision, add a second task that restarts the process if it is stopped.
schtasks /create /tn "SCUM Server" /tr "C:\scumserver\start.bat" /sc onstart /ru SYSTEM /rl HIGHESTUpdates and backups
Stop the server, copy SCUM\Saved, rerun the SteamCMD command (same as the install) and restart. Schedule a daily restart with schtasks.
taskkill /IM SCUMServer.exe /F
robocopy C:\scumserver\SCUM\Saved C:\backups\scum-%DATE:~-4%%DATE:~3,2%%DATE:~0,2% /E
C:\steamcmd\steamcmd.exe +force_install_dir C:\scumserver +login anonymous +app_update 3792580 validate +quit
schtasks /create /tn "SCUM restart" /tr "C:\scumserver\start.bat" /sc daily /st 05:00List and find your server
The server shows up in the Steam/SCUM browser through the query port (UDP 7779) once ServerName is set. Also add your server on game-rank.com/jeux/scum for visibility.
Troubleshooting
- Server will not start: install Visual C++ (2012/2013/2015-2022) and DirectX Runtimes, and check you are on 64-bit Windows.
- Not in the server list: open UDP 7779 (query) and make sure the query port is not between 27020 and 27050.
- Connection refused from the Internet: missing NAT forwarding or provider firewall rule on 7777-7779/UDP.
- Settings overwritten: some panels rewrite ServerName/WelcomeMessage at start; change them in the panel.
- After an update the config changes: start the server once and compare with the generated ServerSettings.ini (keys evolve).
Frequently asked questions
- What is the SCUM server App ID?
- 3792580 (not to be confused with the other SCUM server application). Command: steamcmd +force_install_dir <folder> +login anonymous +app_update 3792580 validate +quit.
- Which ports does SCUM use?
- With -port=7777: UDP 7777 (game), UDP 7778 (raw socket), UDP 7779 (query) and TCP 7777 for optional RCON. Hosts may use other values.
- Can I host SCUM on Linux?
- No native Linux server is officially documented: a Windows VPS or dedicated server is the simplest and most reliable. Community Wine/Docker setups exist but are not covered here.
- How do I update the server?
- Stop it and rerun the same SteamCMD command with app_update 3792580; back up SCUM\Saved first.
