Myth of Empires

Install a Myth of Empires server

Myth of Empires is deployed on Windows (SteamCMD app 1794810) with PrivateServerTool, copied from the game's local install, which produces StartPrivateServer.bat. Detailed config files are not officially documented: this guide sticks to the verified procedure (ZAP-Hosting) and a community panel template for Linux/Proton.

Step-by-step installation

  1. Check the machine: Windows VPS/dedicated, RDP, 9-12 GiB RAM, 10-15 GiB disk.

  2. Download SteamCMD and create the server folder.

  3. Install the server with SteamCMD: login anonymous, app_update 1794810.

  4. Copy MOE\PrivateServerTool from your local Steam game to the server root.

  5. Run PrivateServerTool.exe, enter the server name then Save Config.

  6. Click Start Server: StartPrivateServer.bat is generated; fix the path at the top of the .bat if needed.

  7. Open ports 11888 et 12888 (TCP/UDP) in the firewall and on your router.

  8. Connect via the game's Custom Server tab (search by name); also test from outside.

  9. Configure auto-start (scheduled task or systemd service).

  10. Schedule backups of MOE\Saved and updates.

Requirements

Windows with RDP access (VPS or dedicated). A community panel template (Pterodactyl, June 2024) quotes 9 GiB RAM minimum (12 recommended) and 10 GiB disk (15 recommended); official values are not published. A local copy of the game helps for PrivateServerTool. Same client/server version.

Local install (Windows)

Same procedure as on a Windows server: SteamCMD, copy PrivateServerTool, generate StartPrivateServer.bat, then run the .bat.

C:\steamcmd\steamcmd.exe +force_install_dir C:\MOE-Server +login anonymous +app_update 1794810 +quit
xcopy /E /I "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Myth of Empires\MOE\PrivateServerTool" C:\MOE-Server\PrivateServerTool
cd /d C:\MOE-Server\PrivateServerTool
PrivateServerTool.exe

Install on a Linux VPS / dedicated server

Windows Server: follow the previous section (RDP). Linux: unofficial; a community template runs MOE/Binaries/Win64/MOEServer.exe through Proton (SteamCMD install forced to the Windows platform). Template ports: game 11888, query 12888, RCON 13888. Not verified by the developer.

Ports to open

  • 11888/TCP+UDP: game port
  • 12888/TCP+UDP: query port
  • 13888: RCON (community template, optional)

Windows firewall (netsh)

In an elevated PowerShell (or administrator “cmd”):

netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="Myth of Empires 11888/TCP" dir=in action=allow protocol=TCP localport=11888
netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="Myth of Empires 11888/UDP" dir=in action=allow protocol=UDP localport=11888
netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="Myth of Empires 12888/TCP" dir=in action=allow protocol=TCP localport=12888
netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="Myth of Empires 12888/UDP" dir=in action=allow protocol=UDP localport=12888

Provider firewall and port forwarding (NAT)

If the server is at a provider (OVH, Hetzner, Scaleway…), open the same ports in its network firewall (“security group”). For home hosting, forward the ports (NAT) from your router to the machine's fixed local IP. Test from outside (mobile data or a friend): a test from your own network proves nothing.

Auto-start on Windows (scheduled task)

Create a scheduled task triggered “At startup” that runs the launch script, with highest privileges and “Run whether user is logged on or not”.

Updates, backups and restarts

Stop the server, re-run app_update 1794810, then restart. Back up MOE\Saved before any major update. Run SteamCMD before relaunching StartPrivateServer.bat.

# backup
tar czf ~/backup-$(date +%F).tar.gz -C ~/server MOE\Saved

List and find your server

Once your server is public, add it on https://game-rank.com/jeux/myth-of-empires (the owner's site) so players can find it, follow it and vote for it.

Troubleshooting

  • Unreachable from outside but fine on localhost: the OS firewall, the provider firewall or the NAT forward is missing, or the protocol (UDP/TCP) is wrong. Check each layer one by one.
  • Connection refused after a game update: client and server must run the same version. Re-run the server update, then restart it.
  • The server exits immediately: start it from a console to read the error, and check free RAM, disk space and software prerequisites.
  • The server does not show in Custom Server: make the two IP parameters in StartPrivateServer.bat match your Windows server's IP.
  • PrivateServerTool is missing: it is not in the SteamCMD download, copy it from the MOE folder of your local game.

Frequently asked questions

What is the server's Steam app ID?
1794810 (anonymous works). PrivateServerTool must be copied from the local game.
How do I update the server?
Stop the server, then re-run app_update 1794810; client and server must run the same version.
Is there a config file to edit?
The documented procedure goes through PrivateServerTool. The .ini keys are not officially documented, so we offer no generator.
How do I make my server known?
Add it on https://game-rank.com/jeux/myth-of-empires (the owner's site): players can find it, follow it and vote for it.
