VEIN (early access, Ramjet Studios) has a free dedicated server (SteamCMD app 2131400, anonymous login) on Windows and Linux, configured via Game.ini and launch arguments (-Port, -QueryPort). The game changes fast: re-run the SteamCMD update after every patch.

Step-by-step installation

  1. Check the machine: Windows or Linux x64, RAM and CPU not officially specified.

  2. Download SteamCMD and create the server folder.

  3. Install the server with SteamCMD: login anonymous, app_update 2131400 validate.

  4. Start the server once with -log to generate Vein/Saved/Config/..., then stop it.

  5. Start the server once, stop it, then edit Game.ini (AdminSteamIDs, WhitelistedPlayers…).

  6. Open ports 7777/UDP, 27015/UDP in the firewall and on your router.

  7. Test on localhost (127.0.0.1), then from outside using another network.

  8. Configure auto-start (scheduled task or systemd service).

  9. Schedule backups of Vein/Saved and updates.

Requirements

Windows or 64-bit Linux; the developer publishes no minimum spec in the documentation we consulted, so start with at least 4 cores and 8 GB RAM and adjust to player count (estimate). Anonymous SteamCMD login, no account required. Admins are SteamID64s (no admin password).

Local install (Windows)

Install with SteamCMD, start the server with the default ports, then connect from the game using 127.0.0.1.

C:\steamcmd\steamcmd.exe +force_install_dir C:\vein-server +login anonymous +app_update 2131400 validate +quit
cd /d C:\vein-server
VeinServer.exe -log -Port=7777 -QueryPort=27015

Install on a Linux VPS / dedicated server

On Ubuntu/Debian: a dedicated user, SteamCMD's 32-bit dependencies, install then start the Linux binary (check its name in the folder: VeinServer.sh or Vein/Binaries/Linux/VeinServer-Linux-Test). Game.ini is in Vein/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/.

sudo adduser --disabled-password --gecos "" steam
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 && sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y lib32gcc-s1 curl ca-certificates
sudo -iu steam
mkdir -p ~/steamcmd ~/vein-server && cd ~/steamcmd
curl -sqL https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steamcmd_linux.tar.gz | tar zxf -
./steamcmd.sh +force_install_dir ~/vein-server +login anonymous +app_update 2131400 validate +quit
cd ~/vein-server && ./VeinServer.sh -log -Port=7777 -QueryPort=27015

Ports to open

  • 7777/UDP: game port (-Port=)
  • 27015/UDP: Steam query port (-QueryPort=); some sources cite 7778, confirm on your build

Linux firewall (ufw)

On Ubuntu/Debian, allow SSH first so you do not lock yourself out, then the game ports.

sudo ufw allow OpenSSH
sudo ufw allow 7777/udp
sudo ufw allow 27015/udp
sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw status

Windows firewall (netsh)

In an elevated PowerShell (or administrator “cmd”):

netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="VEIN 7777/UDP" dir=in action=allow protocol=UDP localport=7777
netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="VEIN 27015/UDP" dir=in action=allow protocol=UDP localport=27015

Provider firewall and port forwarding (NAT)

If the server is at a provider (OVH, Hetzner, Scaleway…), open the same ports in its network firewall (“security group”). For home hosting, forward the ports (NAT) from your router to the machine's fixed local IP. Test from outside (mobile data or a friend): a test from your own network proves nothing.

Auto-start and supervision

Create /etc/systemd/system/<name>.service, then: sudo systemctl daemon-reload && sudo systemctl enable --now <name>. Logs: journalctl -u <name> -f.

Auto-start on Windows (scheduled task)

Create a scheduled task triggered “At startup” that runs the launch script, with highest privileges and “Run whether user is logged on or not”.

Updates, backups and restarts

Stop the server, re-run app_update 2131400 validate, then restart. Back up Vein/Saved before any major update. Frequent updates in early access: re-run it after every patch, otherwise players cannot connect.

# backup
tar czf ~/backup-$(date +%F).tar.gz -C ~/server Vein/Saved

List and find your server

Once your server is public, add it on https://game-rank.com/jeux/vein (the owner's site) so players can find it, follow it and vote for it.

Troubleshooting

  • Unreachable from outside but fine on localhost: the OS firewall, the provider firewall or the NAT forward is missing, or the protocol (UDP/TCP) is wrong. Check each layer one by one.
  • Connection refused after a game update: client and server must run the same version. Re-run the server update, then restart it.
  • The server exits immediately: start it from a console to read the error, and check free RAM, disk space and software prerequisites.
  • My Game.ini lines have no effect: check the folder (LinuxServer or WindowsServer), the section and key names, and restart; a wrong name is ignored.

Frequently asked questions

What is the server's Steam app ID?
2131400 (dedicated server, anonymous login); the game itself is 1857950.
How do I update the server?
Stop the server, then re-run app_update 2131400 validate; client and server must run the same version.
How do I make a player an admin?
Add their SteamID64 to AdminSteamIDs (or SuperAdminSteamIDs) in Game.ini then restart: there is no admin password.
How do I make my server known?
Add it on https://game-rank.com/jeux/vein (the owner's site): players can find it, follow it and vote for it.
